Producing The Cutting Edge of Cutting Horses

Located in Roseburg, Oregon, Grouse Butte Ranch Cutting Horses upholds its mission to “produce high quality cutting prospects, one cutting horse at a time" by specializing in breeding, raising, training, and selling high quality cutting horses.

The Grouse Butte Ranch Team

Rees and Nikki Freeman are the proud owners of Grouse Butte Ranch. Rees Freeman entered the cutting industry in 1988, and got his first broodmare Peppy Commander in 1989. Nikki Freeman has been actively involved in all aspects of ranch operations since 1999. Along with being the resident ranch veterinarian technician, Nikki also handles hauling horses, joining competitions, marketing, advertising, developing the ranch’s website, registration of foals, and coordinating events. The ranch also takes pride in its trainer and rider Tom Long, who is considered one of the top Non-Pro and Amateur trainers in the cutting industry and one of the top 10 riders in the West Coast. In 2005, Long was inducted into the NCHA Riders Hall of Fame.

Champion Horses

Rees Freeman’s horses have won many Non Pro and Amateur competitions, including Commander Flo’s victory in the 2003 Suncoast Non Pro Futurity and Smart Play N Stylish’s success at the 2004 Idaho Futurity. Peppy Commander has produced superior ranch progeny, including NCHA champions who have earned more than $250,000. Lil Lena Twist, Freeman’s second broodmare, has also produced offspring with earnings more than $250,000. Another of Freeman’s top horses is Jerry Commander, who landed 4th place in the Non Pro Finals and the 200k Non Pro Finals of the 2007 PCCHA Golden Hills Auto Center Futurity, won the $150,000 Championship Derby, and took in $150,000 at the AM Gelding Derby.
